The meaning of Guru / Who is Guru
(1) According to the Collins Cobuild English Language Dictionary a 'Guru' is -
(A) a religious and spiritual leader and teacher, specially in Hinduism.
(B) an adviser or intellectual leader of a person or a group of people.
(2) Guru is a Sanskrit word which has two syllables - 'Gu' and 'Ru'.
The syllable 'Gu' (गु) refers to darkness, the darkness of ignorance and the syllable 'Ru' (रु) refers to light, the light of spiritual knowledge.
Thus Guru is the one who leads others from darkness to light and who shows right path to others.
In Hinduism the place of a Guru has always been very high.

(1) Guru Vashisth - He was the Guru of Maryada Purushottam Shree Ram.
(2) Sandipani - He was the Guru of Shree Krishna.
(3) Guru Dronacharya - He was the Guru of the Pandavas and the the Kauravas.
(4) Chankya - He was the Guru of Chandragupt Maurya.
(5) Shankaracharya - He gave the true knowledge of Indian culture and tried his best to remove bad customs which prevailed in the society.
(6) Swami Ramanandacharya - He was the Guru of Saint Kabir.
(7) Samarth Guru Ramdas - He was the Guru of Chhatrapati Shivaji.
