Charity during Chaturmaas / What things to be donated during Chaturmaas

Chaturmaas, the four months' period, is considered very important and sacred for the Hindus, the Jains and the Buddhists. During this period doing good deeds and remembering God are considered very fruitful. Visiting temples or any other places of worshiping, performing religious activities and donating things are considered good and fruitful.
The things to be given as donation or charity -
The following things may be donated during Chaturmaas as per the capacity of the person (the donation beyond one's capacity is not considered fruitful).
> A bell made of brass to be used in the temple.
> Utensils made of copper.
> Sesame.
> Oil.
> Food grains.
> Beds
> Cot.
> Cow.
> Gold.
> Jaggery.
> Fruits.
> Rice.
> Barley.
> Dry ginger

Chatur Maas Vrat process / Chaturmas vrat rituals

The period of Chaturmaas is considered as a very sacred  period. During this period various religious festivals and fasts are observed. Some people observe the fast during this whole period. This fast is known as Chaturmaas Vrat.
Chatur Maas Vrat rituals and process -
> Chatur Maas Vrat is observed for four months which begins on Dev Shayani Ekadashi and ends on Dev Uthani or Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi.
> The Vrati should get up early in the morning on the Dev Shayani Ekadashi and take a bath. He / she should wear clean clothes and then she/he should give bath to the idol of Lord Vishnu and make the idol sleep on a cot. Then he/she should pray to Lord Vishnu to sleep for four months and also to make his/her Chaturmaas Vrat successful.
> The Vrati eats one meal during the Chaturmaas period. The Vrati eats saatvik vegetarian food.
> Everyday taking Charanamrit is preferable.
> Chanting the Gayatri Mantra or Vishnu Sahrtanaan is done.
> Reading or listening religious scriptures or attending Katha meetings.
> On the last day of Chaturmaas i.e. on Dev uthani Ekadashi, the Chaturmaas Vrat ends. On this day the Vrati should give donations according to his/her capacity and feed the Brahmans and needy persons.

Chaturmaas (A period of four months)

When is Chaturmaas -
' Chatur ' means four and ' maas ' means month. Thus Chaturmaas is a period of four months.
This period of four months  begins from Ashaad Shukla Eka dashi (Which is also known as Dev Shayani Eka Dashi ) and ends on Kartik Shukla Eka Dashi (Which is also known as also Dev Uthani Eka Dashi Prabodhini Ekadashi )
Important things about Chaturmaas ( What to do during Chaturmaas ) -
1. Chaturmaas is a period for penance, fast, reading and listening to the holy scriptures.
2. During the Chaturmaas, Lord Vishnu should be worshiped and offered Dhoop, Deep, Pushpa, Naivedhye etc.
3. People offer Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu and give bath to the idol of Vishnu and take the Charanamrit.
4. The devotees should go to the Vishnu temple daily and chant the mantra/stotra dedicated to Lord Vishnu or recite the Gayatri mantra for at least 108 times.
5. Give Arghya to the sun god and do havan with Til or Food grains. When the Chaturmaas ends the donation of Til and food grains clothes etc. Should be given.
6. Auspicious activities are usually not performed particularly marriages are not performed.

When is Dev Shayani / Hari Shayani Ekadashi in 2017
Aashadh Shukla Ekadashi is known as Dev Shayani Ekadashi.

Important things about Dev Shayani Ekadashi
According to the Purans Lord Vishnu sleeps on Sheshnag in the Kshir Sagar on Dev Shayani Ekadashi and wakes up after four months and goes back to Vaikunt on Dev Uthani Ekadashi.
This holy day is very important for the Hindus. On this day people worship the images of Lord Vishnu and Goddess  Laxmi , keep fast and spend the night singing and listening to the prayers , stotras and stories related to Lord Vishnu.
Chatur Maas ( the period of four months ) also begins from this day. During the period of Chatur Maas  people should listen or read the discourses on the life and teachings of Lord Vishnu. During the period of Chaturmas, the auspicious work like marriage etc. are not done.
Ekadashi Vrat -It is believed that keeping a fast on Dev Shayani Ekadashi is very pious. This vrat brings happiness and prosperity. The person who keeps this fast gets salvation. The person who observes this fast should :-
- get up early in the morning .
- take bath and offer prayers.
- perform a simple pooja at home, pray and meditate on Lord Vishnu. If possible , go to the near by temple of Vishnu and have Darshan of his image.
- Keep fast for 24 hours and after taking bath,  break the fast next day ( on Dwadashi.)
Prayer Mantras for Dev Shayani Ekadashi -
 Vishnu Sahastranam 
(or) Om Namo Narayan 
(or) Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevay 
(or) any Stotra related to Lord Vishnu
(or) prayer related to Lord Vishnu are considered very fruitful.
