Charity during Chaturmaas / What things to be donated during Chaturmaas

Chaturmaas, the four months' period, is considered very important and sacred for the Hindus, the Jains and the Buddhists. During this period doing good deeds and remembering God are considered very fruitful. Visiting temples or any other places of worshiping, performing religious activities and donating things are considered good and fruitful.
The things to be given as donation or charity -
The following things may be donated during Chaturmaas as per the capacity of the person (the donation beyond one's capacity is not considered fruitful).
> A bell made of brass to be used in the temple.
> Utensils made of copper.
> Sesame.
> Oil.
> Food grains.
> Beds
> Cot.
> Cow.
> Gold.
> Jaggery.
> Fruits.
> Rice.
> Barley.
> Dry ginger

What should not be done during Chaturmaas / What are prohibited acts and things during Chaturmas

In Hinduism Chaturmaas has a special significance. Our scriptures suggest the things to be done and not to be done during Chaturmaas. Here under is the list of things which are not to be done during Chaturmaas -
> One must not eat Taamsik food ( the eatables that have sedative effect on mind and body) during Chaturmaas.
> The saints usually do not move from one place to another during Chaturmaas. They stay at one place and preach and deliver religious lectures to the people.
> Marriages, engagements, mundan, janeo sanskaar, Dev sthapana and such other activities are prohibited.
> Some people avoid sleeping on the cot.

When is Chatur Masas in 2017/ Chatur Maas dates 2017

What is Chaturmaas -
Chatur Maas is a period of four months. This period is considered very sacred particularly for observing Vrat and Upvaas and performing other religious activities. This period is also considered good for the religious activities, listening or reading religious scriptures and making donations according to one's capacity.
The dates of starting and ending the Chaturmaas in the year 2017 (Vikram Samvat 2074) are as follows -
Chatur Maas begins on the Aasaadh Shukla Ekadshi which is also known as Dev shayani Ekadashi. In the year 2017 it falls on Tuesday, 04.07.2017.
Chaturmaas ends on the Kartik Shukla Ekadashi which is also known as Dev uthani Ekadashi or Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi . In the year Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi is on Tuesday, 31 .10. 2017.

(13.1.29) What to do during Chatur Maas

What should be done during Chatur Maas ( Chatur Maas men kya karen)

Chaturmaas is a period of four months. This period is considered very important and sacred for the Hindus. During this period the following activities are preferable -
> One must lead a Satvik life. Cleanliness of body as well as mind should be maintained. Purity of thoughts is also fruitful.
> During the period of chaturmaas Lord Vishnu should be given bath with curds, milk, ghee, honey etc. and should be worshiped by offering dhoop, deepak ( earthen ), pushpa ( flowers ), navaidhya ( eatables made of satvik material ).
> In the evening the deepak is to be lighted.
> Everyday charanamrit should be taken.
> During the whole period, the vrat should be observed.
> If possible one should go to the Vishnu temple and chant Vishnu sahastra naam or om namo bhagawate vaasudevaaya daily. If not possible to go to temple one can chant these things at home.
> Reading or listening the stories or discourses from the scriptures.
>Making donation ( according to one's capacity ) is also fruitful.
> One should give Arghya to the Sun god.
> Havan should be done using Til and food grains chanting Gayatri Mantra during the chaturmaas and when the chaturmaas ends one should donate Til and food to the eligible person.

(13.1.28) Importance of Chatur Maas

What is the significance of Chaturmaas

> Chatur Maas period is considered as a special and significant period of four months for the Hindus, Jains and the Buddhists. The common thing for all these communities is to perform religious activities, listening or reading the scriptures and lead a pious life.
> As it is known that during the period chaturmaas a lot of small creatures are born and in some cases they are not even visible. The Jain saints do not like to harm any creature. So they stay at one place and do not move from one place to another.
> The Buddhists monks also stay at one place and give sermons.
> The people of the Hindu community also consider chaturmaas period as very specific. They follow the rules of this period and observe fast and celebrate festivals which fall during this period. Particularly the month of Shravan and Kartik have a special significance for the Hindus. Shravan month is devoted to Lord Shiva and Kartik is devoted to Lord Vishnu. So people do religious activities perform good deeds during these months.
> Shraaddh Paksh also comes during the period of Chaturmaas. Shraaddh Paksh is considered very significant to appease the deceased forefathers or ancestors. People observe and follow the rituals related to Shraaddh Paksh.

Chatur Maas / Chaturmas  (Which is Chaturmas)

> The word 'Chatur Maas' is the combination of two words - 'Chatur' and 'Maas'. The word 'Chatur' means 'four' and 'Maas' means 'month'. Thus Chatur Maas is a period of four months.
> This period of Chaturmaas or four month has a religious significance for the Hindu, the Buddh, and the Jain communities. It begins from the Ashaadh Shukla Ekadashi and ends on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi.
> During this period people usually perform religious activities without having the wish of getting their fruit like observing fast, taking a bath in holy rivers, visiting temples, eating Satvik food, listening to the lectures delivered by the Saints, chanting Gayatri Mantra, Vishnu Sahastranaam, Om Namo BhagavateVaasudevaay etc.
> Donating things according to the capacity is also done. Sanyasis usually stay at one place and give religious lectures.
> Emphasis is given on performing good deeds and religious activities with the belief that by doing so they get the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
