13-1-2 Saat Phere and Saptpadi

Saat Phere and Saptpadi (A marriage ritual)

There are several rites and rituals which are observed during the Hindu marriage ceremony. Saat Phere and Saptpadi are also included in them.
Saat Phere -
The rite of phere begins with Laazaa Homa ( Yagya Ahuti ) For laaza homa, the leaves of khejari tree, the leaves of Palash tree, the khele of rice,  all soaked in Ghee , are divided into four parts. Then the bride's sister stands beside his sister and touches these things to the bride's hand. Then on behalf of his sister, he gives three Aahutees ( puts these things into the holy fire three times).
While giving these three Aahutees the bride and the bride groom go around the holy fire. The bride goes ahead of the bride groom.
After it, the fourth Aahutee is given. At this time the bride groom goes ahead of the bride and they both move around the holy fire.
This Laazaa homa is the symbol of good luck. The purpose of this homa is to make a prayer and have a wish for the long life of the bride groom.
Sapt Padi -
After the Laazaa Homa ritual, the bride groom makes the toe of the bride's right foot touch one of the seven circles made of rice and Gulaal - one by one and every time says the following things--
1. The bride groom says," O, dear, I ask you to put your first step to make you the mistress of food grains etc. in my house."
2. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your second step so that you may become strong and powerful."
3. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your third step, so that you may earn fame and wealth in life."
4. the bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your fourth step so that you may have pleasures and facilities in life.
5. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your fifth step for the growth of wealth in the form of cows."
6. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your sixth step so that you may enjoy health and happiness during all the six seasons."
7. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your seventh step so that you may enjoy all the seven pleasures of the world and always remain devoted to your husband like Jaanki."
After this ritual the bride and the bride groom take their seats.

Sat Vachan (Seven Vows) in Hindu Marriage. (English version)
In the Hindu culture, marriage is one of the sixteen sanskars. A few rituals are observed during the Vivah Sanskar. Taking seven vows is the important ritual of the marriage.
The place of a married woman is to the left side of her husband. The bride does not come to the left side of  the groom till he accepts the seven vows of hers (bride's). So on asking by the groom to come and sit to his  left side, the bride asks for seven vows before coming to the left side of the bridegroom.
The seven vows -
The bride asks the bride groom -
1. "When you do any religious activity or go on to the pilgrimage or do the udhyapan of a vrat or donate any thing. You should always take me with you. If you agree to it, I can come to your left side."
2. "If you respect my parents, as you respect yours, do the religious acts and always have faith in God, I can  come to your left side."
3. "If you properly bring up our children as well as our pet animals, I can come to your left side".
4. "Sorrows and joys are unavoidable for a household according to his good and bad deeds, but you should always be patient and remain courageous. You should always bear in mind the income and expenditure and spend the money accordingly. If you agree to it, I can come to your left side."
5. "If you take my advice for the activities related to our family, the marriage or engagements etc, I can come to your left side."
6. "When I am with my sahelies (friends) and other women, you should not insult me in front of them."
7. "You should treat other women just like sisters or mothers and always have affection for me in your heart and should not get angry over any trifling matters. If you agree to it, I can come to your left side."
Then the bride groom also asks for the following vow-
You should follow my advice, remain faithful to me, use sweet words while talking to me, you should serve my parents, have affections with my sisters and help me in our household activities and responsibilities.
If you agree to it, you are welcome and come to my left side.
