Chatur Maas Vrat process / Chaturmas vrat rituals

The period of Chaturmaas is considered as a very sacred  period. During this period various religious festivals and fasts are observed. Some people observe the fast during this whole period. This fast is known as Chaturmaas Vrat.
Chatur Maas Vrat rituals and process -
> Chatur Maas Vrat is observed for four months which begins on Dev Shayani Ekadashi and ends on Dev Uthani or Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi.
> The Vrati should get up early in the morning on the Dev Shayani Ekadashi and take a bath. He / she should wear clean clothes and then she/he should give bath to the idol of Lord Vishnu and make the idol sleep on a cot. Then he/she should pray to Lord Vishnu to sleep for four months and also to make his/her Chaturmaas Vrat successful.
> The Vrati eats one meal during the Chaturmaas period. The Vrati eats saatvik vegetarian food.
> Everyday taking Charanamrit is preferable.
> Chanting the Gayatri Mantra or Vishnu Sahrtanaan is done.
> Reading or listening religious scriptures or attending Katha meetings.
> On the last day of Chaturmaas i.e. on Dev uthani Ekadashi, the Chaturmaas Vrat ends. On this day the Vrati should give donations according to his/her capacity and feed the Brahmans and needy persons.

What is the significance of Chaturmaas

> Chatur Maas period is considered as a special and significant period of four months for the Hindus, Jains and the Buddhists. The common thing for all these communities is to perform religious activities, listening or reading the scriptures and lead a pious life.
> As it is known that during the period chaturmaas a lot of small creatures are born and in some cases they are not even visible. The Jain saints do not like to harm any creature. So they stay at one place and do not move from one place to another.
> The Buddhists monks also stay at one place and give sermons.
> The people of the Hindu community also consider chaturmaas period as very specific. They follow the rules of this period and observe fast and celebrate festivals which fall during this period. Particularly the month of Shravan and Kartik have a special significance for the Hindus. Shravan month is devoted to Lord Shiva and Kartik is devoted to Lord Vishnu. So people do religious activities perform good deeds during these months.
> Shraaddh Paksh also comes during the period of Chaturmaas. Shraaddh Paksh is considered very significant to appease the deceased forefathers or ancestors. People observe and follow the rituals related to Shraaddh Paksh.

Chatur Maas / Chaturmas  (Which is Chaturmas)

> The word 'Chatur Maas' is the combination of two words - 'Chatur' and 'Maas'. The word 'Chatur' means 'four' and 'Maas' means 'month'. Thus Chatur Maas is a period of four months.
> This period of Chaturmaas or four month has a religious significance for the Hindu, the Buddh, and the Jain communities. It begins from the Ashaadh Shukla Ekadashi and ends on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi.
> During this period people usually perform religious activities without having the wish of getting their fruit like observing fast, taking a bath in holy rivers, visiting temples, eating Satvik food, listening to the lectures delivered by the Saints, chanting Gayatri Mantra, Vishnu Sahastranaam, Om Namo BhagavateVaasudevaay etc.
> Donating things according to the capacity is also done. Sanyasis usually stay at one place and give religious lectures.
> Emphasis is given on performing good deeds and religious activities with the belief that by doing so they get the blessings of Lord Vishnu.

What is the importance of Kokila Vrat / What is the significance of Kokila Vrat / Why should Kokila Vrat be observed / What are the benefits of Kokila Vrat

> Kokila Vrat is very auspicious and fruitful for the women. This Vrat is observed for one month by following   Vrat process or  Vrat Vidhi .
> The Vrati woman gets up early in the morning and takes a bath if possible in a nearby river or a lake and if it is not possible, she can have a bath at her home. One meal is taken everyday.
> Sleeping on the floor and observing celibacy also make the Vrat more important.
> One must not criticize nor should have malice against others during the whole month.
> So far as possible one should avoid Rag and Dwesh during this month. One must keep one's mind free from evil thoughts and desires. In the Kokila Vrat Gauri - Parvati is worshiped in the form Kokila, a bird cuckoo. (To know why she is worshiped in the form Kokila, click here.)
> At the time of Udhyaapan, the Vrati should perform Homa, give saari, blouse, Bichhiyaa (a type of ornament), the kalash made of copper as a donation and feed the Brahman. Katha should also be listened to.
> By observing this Vrat the unmarried girl gets the husband of her choice and leads a happy married life afterwards. The married woman observes Kokila Vrat to get good fortune, wealth, prosperity and good son. As a result of this Kokila Vrat the woman enjoys the happy married life as well as happy family life and at last goes to the abode of Gauri - Parvati.

Kokila Vrat story / Why is Parvati worshiped in the form of kokila (a bird cuckoo)

Kokila Vrat is dedicated to goddess parvati (Gauri) and is observed by the women to get the blessings of  goddess Parvati. The following story illustrates why goddess Parvati is worshiped in the form of a cuckoo.
Kokila Vrat Katha 
Goddess Parvati, in the form of Sati, was the daughter of Daksha Prajaapati. She chose Lord Shiva as her husband against the wishes of her father (Daksh Prajapati).
After the marriage of Sati , once Daksha organised a Mahayaghya. He invited all the gods and goddesses to attend the Yaghya, but he deliberately did not invite his son in law, Lord Shiva and his daughter, Sati. Although Sati was not invited by her father, yet she wanted to go and attend the Yaghya. Lord shiva was against it. But seeing the determination of Sati, Lord Shiva allowed her to go there along with some of his attendants.
When she reached there, she found that nobody was ready to receive her. She felt insulted and jumped into the sacrificial fire and ended her life. Lord shiva came to know this happening and got furious. He sent his attendant Veer Bhadra to destroy the Yagya organised by Daksh. Veer Bhadra and his army destroyed the Yagya and killed the gods who tried to resist him.
At the request of the gods, Lord Vishnu appeared. He saw the destruction and advised the gods to pacify Lord Shiva. They all prayed to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva took pity and revived the gods who had died.
As Sati had come to attend the Yagya against the will of Lord Shiva so Lord Shiva cursed her to take the form of a cuckoo and remain the same for ten thousand years.
After ten  thousand years when the effect of the curse ended, Sati took birth as Parvati, the daughter of Himalaya. Then at the advice of the sages, she observed one month long vrat and worshiped Lord Shiva. As a result of  this vrat and worshiping,  Lord Shiva was pleased with Parvati and married her.
So this one month's vrat is known as Kokila vrat. By observing this vrat unmarried girl get husband and married women enjoy a prosperous and happy married life.

What is the Kokila Vrat Process / Kokila Vrat ki Vidhi / How is Kokila Vrat observed

Kokila Vrat is observed by women for good luck, prosperity and happy married life. this Vrat is dedicated to goddess Parvati or Gauri.The women who observe Kokila Vrat enjoy the the happy married life and at last go to the abode of Parvati. In this Vrat Parvati or Gauri is worshiped in the form of a cuckoo (Kokila or Koyal), a bird. (To know why she is worshiped in the form Kokila, click here.)
The Process of observing the kokila Vrat -
> Kokila Vrat is observed for one month. It begins on Aasaadh Shukla Purnima and ends on Shravan Shukla Purnima.
> The woman who wants to observe Kokila Vrat should take a bath on the evening of Aashaadh Shukla Purnima and do Sankalp (a resolution) as follows -
"I will observe the Kokila Vrat by following the rules of celibacy." Then on the Shravan Krishna Pratipada, She should have a bath and do the Sankalp -
" Mam Dhan Dhaanyaadi Soubhaagya praaptaye shiv santushtaye cha  Kokila Vrat maham karishya."
" मम धन धान्यादि सौभाग्य प्राप्तये शिवतुष्टये च कोकिला व्रत महं करिष्ये। "
> Everyday the Vati should have a bath and do the shodashopachar puja of idol of a cuckoo (this idol is made of clay and it represents goddess Parvati). This puja process goes on till the shravan Shukla Purnima.
> On the last day the idol of the cuckoo should be adorned with ornaments and donated to the eligible Brahaman or to the mother-in-law of the Vrati.
> Thus by observing this Vrat, doing puja and donating the idols, the woman enjoys the (seven)  worldly pleasures and then goes to the abode of  Gauri Parvati.
"May goddess Parvati fulfill your wishes !"

> The of Saraswati, lord Ganesh, beautiful natural scenes and peacock feathers are favorable. 
> The walls of the study room should be painted light blue or light green or cream or white.

Drawing room is a place where the guests are welcomed and entertained. It should be big in size and free from any disturbance. The following are the tips for the drawing room -
> The drawing room should be in the north or in the north west direction.
> The walls should be painted white, light yellow, light green or light blue. Black, red and dark colours should be avoided.
> The pictures of mountains, green trees, beautiful flowers and auspicious birds are preferable. The pictures of eagles,owls, and other birds which are considered inauspicious should be avoided. The paintings of war, crime, unrest and distress should also be avoided.
> The furniture used in the drawing room should be square or rectangular. it is better to avoid circular or round table in the drawing room.

Amavasya in Adhik Maas / Amavasya in Purushottam Maas

According to the Hindu calendar,there are thirty Tithis in a lunar month. Amavasya is also one of them. Thus there are twelve Amavasya in a year.
When is Purushottam Maas Amavasya -
In the year 2015 (Vikram Samwat 2072 ) Aashadh is the Adhik Maas and the Amavasya is on  Thursday, 16.07.2015 which is also the last day of Adhik Maas
Important things about Purushottam Maas Amavasya -
(1) As mentioned above  Amavasya occurs every month but the Amavasya which falls in Purushottam Maas or in Adhik Maas is known as Purushottam Maas Amavasya. Adhik Maas ends on this day.
(2) Purushottam maas Amavasya is considered very pious and important particularly for worshiping and appeasing the departed ancestors.
(3) The Hindus have a bath in the holy rivers on this day with the belief that it (taking bath) makes them free from sins and griefs.
(4) People feed Brahmins to please the souls of their ancestors. They also perform Tarpan and Shraddhkarm rituals.
(5) Giving donation on Purushottam Maas Amavasya is considered auspicious as it appeases the ancestors of the person who donates.
(6) It is also believed that observing fast on this day frees the people from their Pitar Dosh.
