6-2-1 Adhik Maas /Purushottam Maas

ADHIK MAAS/ADDITIONAL OR EXTRA MONTH/ PURSHOTTAM MAAS

What is Adhik Maas
Adhik maas is an extra month or additional month in the Hindu calendar. Adhik Maas is also known as Mal Maas or Purushottam maas. When there occurs Adhik Maas in a year, that year has thirteen months instead of twelve months.
When does Adhik Maas occur -
Whenever Sankranti does not fall within one month, in that situation, Adhik maas occurs.
When there are two Amavasyas in one and the same month, in that situation, Adhik maas occurs.
According to the Bhavishya Puran, the difference between the lunar month and solar month is called Adhik maas.
Important things about Adhik Maas -
The Hindus follow two types of calendars - The solar calendar and lunar calendar. The solar year is made up of approximately 365 days whereas the lunar year is made up of approximately 354 days. Thus there is a gap of about 11 days between these two types years. This gap increases each year and in about three years it equals to one month approximately. To cover this gap, one additional month is added to the lunar year in approximately two and a half years. Thus Adhik maas or extra month balances the lunar and the solar calendar.
Pure month ( Shuddha maas ) and impure month ( Ashuddha Maas or Mal maas ) -
Adhik maas has one name i. e. Aashadh or Shravan or Bhadrapad etc. but it has about 60 days or two months. These two months are known as the first month and the second month.
Illustration showing Suddha maas and Ashuddha maas -
In the Vikram Samwat 2069, the month of Bhadrapad was the additional month or Adhik maas. So Bhadrapad was known as first Bhadrapad and the second Bhadrapad.
In these two months there are four Pakshas i. e. Krishan Paksha - Shukla Paksha - Krishna Paksha - and Shukla Paksha respectively.
The Krishna Paksha of the first Bhadhrapad and the Shukla Paksha of the second Paksha are known as the pure or Shuddha Bhadrapad.
And thr Shukla Paksha of the first Bhadrapad and the Krishna Paksha of the second Bhadrapad is known as the Adhik maas or Mal maas or Purushottam maas. Thus -
(1) From the first Bhadrapad Krishna Paksha ( From Pratipada to Amavasya ) i.e. from 3. 8.2012 to 17.8.2012 was the Suddha maas or pure maas. And from second Bhadrapad Shukla Paksha ( from Pratipada to Purnima ) i.e. from 17.9.2012 to 30.9.2012 is pure maas or Suddha maas. ( Namely, out of the four Paksha, the first Paksha and  the fourth Paksha form the Shddha Maas )
(2) From first Bhadrapad Sukla Paksha to second Bhadarapad Krishna Paksha i.e. from 18.8.2012 to 16.9.2012 was known as Adhik Maas or Mal Maas or impure Maas or Purushottam Maas. ( Namely, out of the four Paksha , the second and the third Paksha dorm the Adhik Maas or Mal Maas.)
Thus in the light of the above illustration, it can be concluded that whatever the Vrat or festivals are celebrated, will be celebrated in the pure month or Suddha maas. In the above illustration the Shuddha maas is from 3.8.2012 to 17.8.2012 and from 1.9.2012 to 16.9.2012.

(6.1) WHAT IS ASTROLOGY

 What is Vedic Astrology--
Indian astrology is known as Vedic astrology. It is the integral part of Vedic culture. Besides four Vedas there are six vedangs also which literally mean the limbs or organs of Vedas. They are six in number. Their names are 1. Shiksha 2.Kalpa  3.Vyakarna 4.Nirukta 5.Chandas 6. Jyotish (astronomy and astsrology).
These six limbs were taught and studied as the integral part of the ancient  vedic education system. These Subjects helped the learners in their all round development of these six subjects. Jyotish deals with the study of heavenly bodies and study of the destiny of a person.
It can be said that the calculations of the Vedic astrologers are reliable. Even in those days when people had  no modern instruments, the sages of ancient India calculated the accurate motion and position of the planets. They were able to tell the exact time and date of solar and Lunar eclipses.  Thus Indian astrology is scientific in nature and uses mathematical calculations to arrive at the accurate predictions.

(4.2.1) PUSHKAR

HOLY Pushkar :-
Pushkar is one of the main pilgrimage spots in India. It is a semi circular lake around which there are fifty two Ghats. The lake is a holy place and is known as the Tirthraaj( the king of the Teerthaas) . There are four importtant holy places of the Hindus in India i.e. Badrinaath, Jagannathpuri, Rameshwaram and Dwarkapuri but the bath at Pushkar is thought to be more important than at any other place. The holy dip in this lake on Kartik Poornima is thought to be salvation giving.

How "Pushkar" got its name:-

All the important and sacred places have been named after some important persons or events. Pushkar was also named like that.
Once Brahma was worried over the matter of not having a place in his name on the earth as the other gods have. So He also had a desire to have a place in His name in the immortal world (on the earth). Having such desire in his mind and saying -"Mangal Ho!.....". He threw a lotus flower upon the earth. The flower fell at three places. Then Brahma said that these three places would be known as Pushkar. The place where the flower fell first is called Jyeshth Pushkar (senior Pushkar), the second place is called Madhya Pushkar(middle Pushkar) and the third place in called Kanishth Pushkar(junior Pushkar). Then he further added that these three Kunds (lakes) would be famous for removing the sins of the sinners. As Brahmaji threw the Pushp(flower) with his Kar(hand) so he gave the name of Pushkar to this place.

Religious Importance of Pushkar:-

Pushkar is one of the holiest places of the Hindus. Though bathing at all the Theerths (holy places) removes the sins of a sinner yet the Darshan only of Pushkar makes a sinner free from all the deadliest sins. To die at this place is salvation giving. The person suffering from thirst forgets to drink water as soon as he enters the lake of Pushkar.  The great sages of India realized the goal of life i.e. salvation here by meditating on God.
It is known as the dwelling place of all the gods. The man who bathes in the Shukla Paksh of Kartik month and has the Darshan of Brahma, will not take rebirth on this earth and enjoy the bliss of heaven. The people who have a holy dip at the lake on Kartik Poornima, gain the fruit equal to do the Jap and Tap for one hundred years.
Temples at Pushkar:- Pushkar is famous for its temples. There are more than four hundred temples in and around Pushkar. Some of them are very old and some are new. They  were built by kings, Rishis, wealthy persons at different times. The temples are of different gods and goddesses. Everyday hundreds of pilgrims come here and have Darshan of gods. Some temples are among the hills. Some important temples as follows:-

There is a statue of Gayatri near Brahma's statue. The present statue of Brahmaji is not original one. Emperor Auranjeb  during is rule destroyed the statue of Lord Brahma. A Brahmin woman named Phoondi bai the daughter of Girdhar Das and the mother of Shambhuram ji setup the statue of Lord Brahma. To this temple the present form was given by Gokulchand Pareek the minister of Dolatram Sindhiya in 1809 A.D.  Within the compound of it there are some temples also. 7-3-7Eight Steps Towards Sprituality

This age of ours is the age of science and technology. A notable progress has been made in every field. People have all kinds of means to fulfill their desires and necessities. It has made the thinking of people materialistic. As a result of materialism, they (people) have become over ambitious. This over ambitiousness makes them restless and dissatisfied. In some cases it causes stress.
So one must follow the spiritual way to face  these problems and get refined solutions to them. For it the following steps are to be taken-
1. Come, let us feel the divine power within ourselves.
2. Come, let us move towards light, the light of true knowledge.
3. Come, let us help ourselves.
4. Come, let us go ahead from where we are standing.
5. Come let us have belief on ourselves.
6. Come, let us share our pleasures and pains with others.
7. Come, let us turn the obstacles into the stepping stones to success.
8. Come, let us live a real life of hope and happiness.

7-3-6 Pine for what is not ( Aprapt Ki Chahat)

Pine for what is not/ Aprapt ki Chahat

A person is not happy or satisfied what things he has. He wishes to have much more things what he does not have. It is the common nature of almost all the persons. On account of this nature human race has made a great progress. But if the desire of getting more and more, becomes uncontrolled or limitless, it has adverse effect and causes unhappiness. This world is full of infinite number of beautiful things. One cannot get each and every thing. Due to the human nature a person thinks that happiness consists in the fulfillment of desires. But the desires are endless so happiness always remains an unrealized goal. It does not mean that one should not make an effort to get new things what one does not have, but it means that one must be satisfied with what one already has, and must not madly run after the things which one does not have.
We must admit the fact that life is a blend of pleasures and sorrows, tears and smiles. They are the inseparable parts of our life. We must not ignore this fact.
The real happiness is in the acquisition of some moral values. It lies in contentment. In other words we must be satisfied with what we have and we must not pine for what we do not have. Happiness lies in facing the reality of life, doing our duties honestly and leaving the results to God.
One thing more "our position (in all the fields) should be better than others,"this feeling or desire makes the situation worse because it causes distress and discomfort. Due to this desire we try to get more and more. In trying to get more, sometimes we have to use unfair means which lead to us in the wrong direction.
Besides it, how soever much we have, we will still find dearth of some thing or the other. So the best way to be happy is to do the best use of the things we already have, and be satisfied with them and we must not pine for what we do not have.

7-3-5 Devotion To Profession(Vyasay Ke Prati Nishtha

 Devotion to Profession

Work makes the world giving on. The progress of the family, society, nation and the world depends on the work done by the persons. The work done by the every individual has its own importance. Work is neither small nor big. It is the attitude of the persons which may be small or big but not the work. The mayor of a city is the first citizen of that city whose duty is do the work and to make the plans for the development and for the betterment of the city. But if the sweepers of that city do not work  even for two or three days, what will be the condition of the city ? This situation proves that the work of a sweeper is not less important than that of the mayor. The same thing applies to every work or profession.
So the person should have high feeling towards his or her profession. He should do his duty as if it were the divine order. Having a noble feeling towards one's profession produces wonderful results. Through the same feeling the person makes progress in his life, and gets himself ready to shoulder important responsibilities, and as a result of it other persons begin to have a feeling of respect towards that person.
There might be some pieces of work that may seem boring but if we do them with the feeling of enthusiasm and delight they become interesting. In Rajasthan and particularly in the rural area of Rajasthan when the women do hard work, they sing to remove to tediousness or weariness. Such type of singing turns the hard and boring work into a kind of picnic.
When the person does his work with happiness, devotion and honesty, the possibility of success in that work becomes stronger. If the work is done with a high spirit, it adds glory to the work and the worker finds satisfaction with that work. So we must have respect for our profession and do our job with zeal and high spirit.

7-3-3 How to Concentrate (Chitta Ki Ekagrata ke Upay)

What is concentration-
Concentration is an act of giving all attention to something that is read or done or listened to.
Concentration is giving all your attention to what you are doing or to what someone is saying.
The importance of Concentration ( Why is concentration necessary ) -
For the success in every action, concentration of mind is the first and the foremost necessity. But in everyday life we experience that our mind can not remain stable for a long time. As a result of it, we can not pay proper or desired attention to the particular thing or an action. As we know, we can see our clear image in the water only when it is still and stable. In the same way if our mind is unstable, we can not concentrate on the particular thing or the activity which we want to accomplish.
Measures for concentration of mind or how to concentrate or tips for concentration -
The following are the measures which can help one to concentrate one's mind -

1. In a separate room or at a peaceful place, lie quietly keeping your face upward, relax your body completely, close your eyes and try to fix your mind on a particular part of your body one by one i.e. on nose, on mouth, on forehead, on chest, on right eye, on left eye etc. ( one by one ) for at least one minute. While doing so you can recite Gayatri Mantra or any other Mantra of your choice. When the Mantra is over, fix your mind  on the next part of your body and repeat the same mantra. Do this practice for five to ten minutes daily.
2. With full attention, look at any holy symbol like ' Om' , ' Swastik ' or any other symbol of your choice keeping proper distance from your eyes for three to five minutes.
3. Do a one thing at a time and start the next thing only the first thing is completed to your satisfaction.
4. Purification of mind is also necessary for concentration power of mind. For it - ( A ) Feel glad when you see someone making progress in his/her life.
(B) Always try to be happy and practice the proverb ' happiness shared is happiness doubled.'
(C) Do not have malice or ill will for others.
(D) Do not have a desire or feeling to insult others.

7-3-2 Bhoutik aur aadhyatmik Unnati

 Material and Spiritual Progress

Today man has made a great progress in every field. A revolutionary change has taken place in the field of medicine, health, agriculture, transportation, telecommunication etc. Due to this progress materialistic comforts have increased a lot.
In spite of being all these materialistic comforts and progress, people in general are living a life of restlessness and uneasiness. As a result of it, they are losing their mental peace.
This situation shows that material progress and prosperity alone cannot be the means of mental peace. Wealth is not everything . It is possible for a man to be unhappy although he has every thing. On the other hand the people who have very little can be happy. The people of the so called advanced countries find life more and more difficult. They are bored. They suffer from nervous breakdown, fear, aimlessness, unhappiness and  dissatisfaction. Money cannot give real happiness. People ,who are prosperous, fail to find happiness in the economic prosperity. Such type of people are in search of things or places which can give them real joy and peace.
But it does not mean that there must not be any materialistic progress. For fulfilling the requirements and necessities of life, material progress is essential. But at the same time spiritual progress is also necessary. Without spiritual control, the material progress may lead the people to the wrong direction and invite a lot of troubles. So the material progress and the spiritual progress must go side by side. Only then the people can be happy in a real sense. The balanced progress in both the fields i. e. in material and in spiritual fields, can establish inner as well as outer progress. Neglecting the spiritual progress certainly causes negativity in some cases.
