(14.3.9) Smarta/ Smartha and Vaishanva Sampradaay

Smarta/ Smartha and Vaishnava Sampradaay

There are some Hindu festivals and vrats which are celebrated and observed in accordance with the tradition of different religious Sampradaays. Two of these Sampradaayas i.e. Smart/ Smarth and Vaishnava Sampradayas are important Sampradays.
The followers of these two sampradaays follow the decisive factors while observing the vrat and celebrating the festivals. For this reason, the EkadaashiJahmashtamiMaha Shivratri etc. are sometimes observed on two different days i.e. the smarts  observe them on the first day whereas the vaishnavas observe them on the second day.
According to the Scripture Dharm sindhu, smarts observe the vrat in Poorva Viddha (पूर्व विद्धा ) tithi and the vaishnavas observe the vrat in the Parvarti (परवर्ती ) tithi. So it creates a confusion among the people and the question arises who are the Smarts and who are vaishnavas.
Who are the Smart/ smarth ?
The people who follow the Vedas and Shastra are called Smarths. They are the followers and propagators of Smiritis or religious text derived from Vedic scriptures. They also worship Panchdevas. They should all follow the smarth traditions and observe vrat in accordance with them.
Who are the Vaishnavas ?
The religious people who have taken Diksha from any established Vaishnava Guru, wear the Kanthi (Given by the Guru) around their neck, apply Tilak of Chandan or  Gopi chandan etc. as the symbol of Tripund on their forehead and throat, are known as the Vaishnavas. They should observe the Vaishnava Vrat.

(13.1.11) Yagyopaveet Sanskaar/Upnayan Sanskaar

 Upnayan Sanskar

What is Yagyopavit-
A yagyopavit which is also known as Janeo, is the sacred thread worn by the Hindus. This sacred thread has three strands. These three strands Symbolize three debts (Rin) i.e. Guru Rin (debt to one's teacher), Pitra Rin (debt to one's parents and ancestors), Dev Rin (debt to gods). These three strands also symbolize- Maa Parvati, Maa lakshmi and Maa Sarswati. These three strands also represent purity in thoughts, words and deeds.
The word yagyopavit is a combination of two words 'yagya' and 'upvit', which means the thing which is worn to perform yagya and without wearing it yagya is not performed.
What is yagyopavit Sanskaar or Upnayan Sanskaar ?
A yagyopavit sanskaar is one of the sixteen Sanskaars of the Hindus. Yagyopavit sanskaar is the ceremony when the boy is given the holy thread (Janeo) to wear for the first time. Only after undergoing this sanskaar, the person is entitled to perform other sanskaars. Yagyopavit sanskaar is considered very important for  making the boy very intelligent, powerful, talented and cultured.
When is yagyppavit sanskaar performed ?
For the Brahmin boy yagyopavit sanskaar should be performed when he attains the age of 8 years. For this sanskaar the age of the khsatriya boy should be 11 years and the age of the Vaishya boy should be 12 years.
If it is not possible to perform yagyopavit sanskaar at the age shown above, then this sanskaar can be performed when the Brahmin boy attains the age of 16 years, the Khsatriya boy attains the age of 16 years and the Vaishya boy attains the age of 24 years.

( 14.2.6 ) Why is Hanuman Applied Vermilion / Sindur to Hanumanji

Why is Hanuman ji applied vermilion-

Some Hindu gods are pleased and like some particular thing or things. When these things are offered to them, they are pleased. For example Lord Shiva is pleased when someone offers bel leaves to him, Lord Ganesh is pleased with Durva (A kind of Grass). Lord Vishnu is pleased with Tulsi. Likewise monkey god Hanumanji is pleased with Sindur (vermilion).
The following is the story showing why Hanuman ji is applied (Smeared) Sindur -
One day Hanuman ji was hungry, so he went to Mata sita and said,"Mother, I am hungry. Kindly give me some thing to eat. Sita said affectionately, after taking my bath, I shall give you Modak (a kind of sweet) to eat." Hearing Sita's words, Hanuman began to chant 'Ram,  Naam' and waited for Sita to come back after taking her bath. After taking bath Sita applied vermilion on her head. Hanuman asked her, " Mother, why are you are applying this vermilion on your head?" Sita replied," I apply sindur for the long life of my husband, Lord Ram."
Hanuman began to think over what Sita had said. Applying sindur, increases the life of my Lord. He got up all of a sudden and smeared sindur on his own body thinking that it would increase the age of Lord Ram and He (Ram) will become immortal.
Then Hnuman went to the Raj Sabha of Lord Ram. Ram saw Hanuman with vermilion on his entire body and began to laugh and asked ,"Why have you applied sindur on your body ?" Hanuman explained to him the reason." Lord Ram smiled at his innocence and said," Today is Tuesday. I shall be pleased with the person who will apply sindur and oil to my devotee Hanuman on this day. This action of theirs will fulfil their desires."
Since then people apply and offer sindur to god Hanuman.

(6.2.19) Gan Dosh (Kundali Milaan or Match making )Gan Dosh Remedy

What is Gan Dosh ? How is Gan Dosh formed? The Parihar of Gan Dosh / Gan Dosh Remedy /How harmful is Gan Dosh

Gan and Match Making -
The birth charts of the boy (Var) and a girl (Vadhu) are matched before their marriage takes place. It is done to know whether these charts have all the things  which make the marriage successful or not. This match making of the birth charts is called Ashtakoot Milan or Gun matching or Kundli Milan or Kundli matching .When Kundalis are matched the following 8 factors or things are considered and checked .These factors are :- Varn ,Vashya , Tara , Yoni ,Grah Maitri , Gan , Bhakoot and Nadi . Each factor is respectively assigned one to eight points or Gunas . The total number of points is 36 . Out of 36 points minimum 18 points are required for matching the Kundali or birth charts .In the match making, Gan Koot is regarded one of the the most important factors. Out of 36 points, 6 points are given to Gan.
How is Gan Dosh formed -
The Nakshatra, in which the moon is placed at the time of the birth of the person, is known as the Janm Nakshatra of the person. The Gan of the person is based on his/her Janm Nakshatra.
There are three categories of Ganas -
(1) Dev Gan (2) Manushya Gan (3) Rakshas Gan
(1) If the person's Janm Nakshatra is any one of the following Nakshatras, his / her Gan is Dev Gan -
Ashvini, Mrigshira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hast, Swati, Anuradha,   Shravan, Revati.
(2) If the person's Janm Nakshatra is any one of the following Nakshatras, his / her Gan is Manushya Gan -
Bharani, Rohini, Aadra, Poorva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Purva shadha, Uttarashadha, Purva Bhadrapad, Uttara Bhadrapad.
(3) If the person's Janm Nakshatra is any one of the following Nakshatras, his / her Gan is Rakshas Gan -
Kritika, Aashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Mool, Dhanishtha, Shatbhisha.
The table showing the Gun/points as per Gan of the Var (Bride groom) and Vadhu (Bride) -
Var -----------Vadhu --------Gun/Points
Dev------------Dev  ---------- 6
Manushya----Manushya-----6
Rakshas-------Rakshas-------6
Dev------------Manushya-----6
Manushya----Dev-------------5
Dev-----------Rakshas--------1
Rakshas------Dev-------------1
Rakshas------Manushya-----0
Manushya---Rakshas--------0
The result or the effect of the Ganas-
In the light of the above table we see that -
(1) If the male (bride groom) and the female (bride) have the same Gan, it is the best situation for them. They both lead a happy life. There is the deep love between them. They generally have the same nature, temperament and ideas.
(2) If the male and the female have Dev - Manushya or Manushya- Dev Gan , it is also considered a good situation.
(3) If the male and the female have Dev- Rakshas, Rakshas- Dev or Rakshas-Manushya, Manushya- Rakshas Gan , it is not considered a good situation. This situation causes Gan Dosh. Under this situation marriage is not permitted unless the Parihar or the exception is available.
Parihar of Gan Dosh / Gan Dosh Remedy / Gan dosh Nivaaran
(1) If the Rashi Swami (the lord of  the Rashis) of both Var (male) and Vadhu (female) is one and the same or there is a mutual friendship between the lords of their Rashi Swamis, it is the Parihar of Gan Dosh.
(2) If  the Navanshesh ( the lord of the Navansh) of both Var (male) and Vadhu (female) is the same or they are friends, it is the Parihar of Gan Dosh.
(3) Bhakoot Shuddhi  (i.e. free from Bhakoot Dosh) is also the Parihar of Gan Dosh.
