What is a Prahar / Ashth Prahar

According to the Hindu calendar the duration of the day and night is divided into 8 equal units. These units are known as Prahars. One Prahar is of approximately three hours.
Praharis is considered very important for Shiv Puja on Shiv Ratri. / Maha Shiv Ratri
The calcutation of Prahar -
If the sun rises at 06 a.m. and sets at 06 p.m. and again rises at 06 a.m. next day. These 24 hours are divided into eight Prahars as follows -
Day's first Prahar - 06:00 a.m. to 09:00 a.m.
Day's second Prahar - 09:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
Day's third Prahar - 12:00 noon to 03:00 p.m.
Day's fourth Prahar - 03:00 p.m. to 06:00 p.m.
Night's first Prahar - 06:00 p.m. to 09:00 p.m.
Night's second Prahar - 09:00 p.m. to 12:00 mid night.
Night's third Prahar - 12.00 mid night to 03:00 a.m.
Night's fourth Prahar - 03:00 a.m. to 06:00 a.m.
