13-1-4 Solah Sansakar

What is Sanskar ?  Solah Sansakar / Shodash Sanskar / What are the names of Solah Sanskar ? Which are sixteen Sanskars ?

1. The literal meanings of Sanskaar  are purification, refinement, ceremony,rite, sacrament etc.
2. Sanskaar is an action or a series of actions through which good qualities or virtues are in inculcated and deficiencies or shortcomings are removed.
3. Sanskaar can be defined as the purification of one's thoughts and feelings.
4. Sanskaar removes shortcomings and enhances virtues.
5. Through sanskaar a person gains spiritual progress and achieves liberation .
Solah Sanskaar-
According to the Hindu religion there are 16 Sanskaars or sacraments --
1. Garbhaadhaan Sanskaar 2. Punsvan 3. Seemantonnayan
These  three Sanskaars are pre-birth sanskaars of a child.
4. Jaatakarm 5. Naamkaran 6. Nishkraman 7. Annapraashan 8. Mundan 9. Karanvedh
These six sanskaars are related to the childhood.
10. Vidhyaarambh 11. Yagyopaveet 12. Vedaarambh 13. Keshaant 14. Samaavartan 15. Vivah 16. Antheshthee
Here under is given the short description of the sixteen Sanskaars-
1. Garbhaadhaan sanskaar - This is the first sanskaar. For this sanskaar the husband and the wife must have pure thoughts.
2. Punsavan sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed after three months of conception. Its done for the proper development of the fetus.
3. Seemantonnayan sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed after the sixth or eighth month of conception. This sanskaar is done for the mental development of the child. In this sanskaar the mother is inspired to have excellent thoughts through different holy symbols and inspirational stories.
4. Jaatkarm sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed after the birth of the child. In this sanskaar the Ved mantras are chanted.
5. Naamkaran sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed on the tenth or eleventh day after the birth. In this sanskaar the newly born child is given the name.
6. Nishkraman sanskaar - This is performed after the third or fourth month of the birth. In this sanskaar the child is taken out of the house.
7. Karnvedh sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed after the sixth, seventh or eights month of the birth. In this sanskaar the child's ear lobes are pierced.
8. Annapraashanna sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed after the six month of the birth. In this sanskaar solid food is given to the child first time.
9. Mundan sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed in the first year or in the third year after the birth. This sanskaar is releted to the shaving the head of the child.
10. Vidhyarambh sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed when the child attains the age of five year. The child salutes Lord Ganesh and  Devi Sarswati. The teacher blesses the child and the learning of the alphabet begins.
11. Yagyopavit sanskaaar - In this sanskaar a holy thread is given the child to wear. Guru mantra is given to the child.
12. Vedarambh sanskaar - The child is sent to the Gurukul to study the vedas and other holy scriptures.
13. Keshaant sanskaar - This sanskaar was performed before leaving the Gurukul.
14. Samaavartan sanskaar - This sanskaar was perfored at the end of the child's study the Gurukul. After this sanskaar the child entered the Grihasth Aashram.
15. Vivah sanskaar - This sanskaar is related to the sacred union of two souls. It is the entry into the family life.
16. Antyeshthi sanskaar - This sanskaar is performed after the death of the person.

13-1-3 Toran (Custom of Hindu Marriage )

Toran - A Marriage Ritual 

What is a Toran - 
A Toran is a small board made of wood. It has a symbol of swaastik and a painting ( picture ) of Lord Ganesh on it. Toran is a symbol of auspiciousness and prosperity. According to some other legend Toran is a symbol of victory. The Toran is hung on the main gate of the bride's home.
Toran Puja or Toran Maarnaa --
Toran puja, which is popularly known as Toran Maarnaa, is an important ritual of the Hindu marriage, particularly in Rajasthan and in some other adjoining states.
How is Toran Puja performed - The bride groom reaches the bride's home with his friends, relatives and other Baratis. He rides on a mare. The mother of the bride and other women welcome him ( the bride groom ) at the gate. She does his Aarti also. The Pandit recites some holy Mantras. Then the puja of the Toran is performed. After this puja, the bride groom touches the Toran with a stick or a sword.
Legend -
According to a legend, there was a demon whose name was Toran, who stood at the gate of a city to guard it. He did not let the gods enter the city to worship etc. He also put obstacles in the marriages and other auspicious activities. Only after killing him, the gods were able to enter the city easily. Since then this ritual is known as 'Toran Maarnaa'. The touching of the Toran with a stick or a sward by the bride groom is symbolic of killing the demon Toran.

13-1-2 Saat Phere and Saptpadi

Saat Phere and Saptpadi (A marriage ritual)

There are several rites and rituals which are observed during the Hindu marriage ceremony. Saat Phere and Saptpadi are also included in them.
Saat Phere -
The rite of phere begins with Laazaa Homa ( Yagya Ahuti ) For laaza homa, the leaves of khejari tree, the leaves of Palash tree, the khele of rice,  all soaked in Ghee , are divided into four parts. Then the bride's sister stands beside his sister and touches these things to the bride's hand. Then on behalf of his sister, he gives three Aahutees ( puts these things into the holy fire three times).
While giving these three Aahutees the bride and the bride groom go around the holy fire. The bride goes ahead of the bride groom.
After it, the fourth Aahutee is given. At this time the bride groom goes ahead of the bride and they both move around the holy fire.
This Laazaa homa is the symbol of good luck. The purpose of this homa is to make a prayer and have a wish for the long life of the bride groom.
Sapt Padi -
After the Laazaa Homa ritual, the bride groom makes the toe of the bride's right foot touch one of the seven circles made of rice and Gulaal - one by one and every time says the following things--
1. The bride groom says," O, dear, I ask you to put your first step to make you the mistress of food grains etc. in my house."
2. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your second step so that you may become strong and powerful."
3. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your third step, so that you may earn fame and wealth in life."
4. the bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your fourth step so that you may have pleasures and facilities in life.
5. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your fifth step for the growth of wealth in the form of cows."
6. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your sixth step so that you may enjoy health and happiness during all the six seasons."
7. The bride groom says, "O, dear, I ask you to put your seventh step so that you may enjoy all the seven pleasures of the world and always remain devoted to your husband like Jaanki."
After this ritual the bride and the bride groom take their seats.

When is Sharad Purnima / Kojagari Vrat
In the year 2016 Sharad Purnima / Kojagari Purnima / Kojagari Vrat / Sharad Purnima Vrat is on Saturday, 15.10.2016 .
Important things :-
(1) Ashvin Shukla Purnima is known as Sharad Purnima or Kojagari Purnima.
(2) Kojagari means- who is awake? It is believed that on the night of Sharad Purnima , Indra riding on his elephant Eravat and Lakshmi visit every house and ask , " Who is awake ?" And they bless those who are awake. So people remain awake the whole night.They sing religious songs or tell and listen to religious stories.
(2) It is also believed that on this night , the moon light is very bright and the moon showers Amrit through its rays. So people prepare Kheer ( a sweet dish made of milk and rice) and place it in the moonlight through out the night. Next day it is offered to God and distributed as the Prasad to the people.It is said that this Kheer has the power to remove the physical ailments.
(3) Some people believe that threading a needle in the moonlight improves one's eyesight. So they thread a needle in the moonlight.
(4) It is also believed that Lord Krishna started Raas Lila from this night.
(5) Kartik Snan, a holy bath also starts from this day.
Kojagari Vrat :-
The people who observe Kojagari Vrat should worship goddess Lakshmi on the night of Sharad Purnima. The Vrati ( the person who observes fast ) should light at least one hundred earthen lamps at different places like in a temple,on the way,at the cross road, in the streets, on the roof of the houses, in the garden, near the Tulsi plant etc. 
Next day in the morning the Vrati should feed the Brahmin with Kheer and give him some money as Dakshina which is considered very fruitful. 
Sharad Purnima Vrat:-
The persons who observe fast on  Sharad Purnima should get up early in the morning take a bath and worship gods and goddesses.They should make Kheer in the evening and place it in the moonlight. Next day they should offer it to gods and goddesses and distribute it as Prasad. It is believed that the women who keep this fast, their children remain alive and enjoy a long and healthy life.

When is Karva Chauth in 2016
In the  year 2016 Karva Chauth is on Wednesday , 19 October, 2016. On this day the moon will rise at 21:05 hours.(S.T. Jodhpur)
Puja Vidhi and other important things about Karva Chauth -
Karva Chauth  is a festival and Vrat which is very popular among married women in north India. The married Hindu women observe strict fast for the good health and long life of their husbands. According to Vaman Puran this ritual of fasting falls on the Krishna Paksh Chaturthi in the month of Kartik. The married women worship Shiv ,Parvati , Kartikey and the moon. For the worship they fill the Karva, a small pot made of clay, with water and put Ber , Aanvala ,Kachara etc.in this pot.On this pot a bowel full of sugar and a piece of blouse are also kept. In the evening  the women wear special clothes , usually a red or pink sari. They gather in a group and worship Shiv , Parvati , Kartikey and the moon. Then they narrate mythological stories emphasising the significance of Karva Chauth. When the moon rises , they give water (arghya) to it. Then they break their fast.

The devotees of Lord Krishna observe fast on this day. It is believed that when Lord Krishna was born , the Tithi was Krishna  Paksh  Ashtami , the month was Bhadrapad , the  day was Wednesday , the Nakshatra was Rohini, the time was mid night and the moon was in the Vrishabh Rashi.

Why is Ganga Dashara celebrated ?
On Dashmi Tithi of Shukal Paksh of Jeshtha , the holy river Ganga came down to the earth from heaven. So  taking a bath in the river Ganga is considered to be very auspicious. And if it is not possible to bathe in the Ganga , people can have  a bath in the nearby river or at other places with the feeling as if they are having a bath in the river Ganga. After taking a bath, they should sit at a peaceful  place and worship the river Ganga chanting the following Mantra :-
"Om Namah Shivayai Naaraayanyai Dasharaayai Gangaayai Namah."
" ॐ नमः शिवायै नारायण्यै दशहरायै गंगायै नमः।"
Donations :-
If the person wants to donate things , the quantity of the things should be ten in number. Giving donations removes the sins of the person. While giving donations, chant the Mantra -
 " Gangaayai Namah. " 
' गंगायै नमः'।
