Kuber, the king of Alkapuri had a servant whose name was Hemamali. The servant's duty was to pick flowers for Kuber. He used the flowers in worshiping Lord Shiva. One day Hemamali got lost in enjoying with his wife and remained unable in carrying the flowers before the time of worshiping. At this Kuber got angry and cursed the servant to suffer from leprosy and become separated from his wife.
After going from one place to another (as a leper) Hemamali reached the Himalayas where he fortunately met a great sage Markandeya. Hemamali told him why and what had happened to him. Markandeya Rishi advised him,"If you observe fast on Yogini Ekadashi, you will be free from this terrible curse."
